In regards to hosting sites I have tried a few and have had the best luck with Blue Host. What is the hosting site? It is the place where your web site files will be stored. A web hosting service is a type of Internet hosting service that allows individuals and organizations to make their website accessible via the World Wide Web.Make sure you get unlimited space since photography sites tend to grow exponentially. Finding a good hosting service is critical to the success of your web page. Take the time to look around and ask questions before you make that first year payment. Moving your site from one hosting vendor to another is not fun. Is Blue Host perfect? No. Do they sometimes have down time? Yes. But most other hosting sites have worst issues and the Blue Host support is good. Blue Host has been around since 2003 and has gained a good reputation. They also provide wizards and click and install applications to support your site. Their prices are average, but you don’t want to pay two dollars a month to be hosted from some back yard.

I have personally had two sites with BlueHost for over four years and it has been a good experience. Note: Check their sales site at different times during the day to get the best bargain since there prices change often. Like I said in the previous post they can provide the hosting services and also the domain name.
I did not want to start my site by creating it from scratch so I opted to install WordPress. If you’re an expert in HTML, PHP and MySQL go for it, build that site from scratch; if you don’t have an idea how to link to another web page then stay with me. WordPress is a free and open source blogging tool and a content management system (CMS) based on PHP and MySQL, which runs on a web hosting service. Why is WordPress free? WordPress is an open source community project where tens of thousands of talented people have made contributions to make it what it is today. So no individual person really owns it. Money is made through plugins and during the creation of your nature photography site you will need these (plugins) to get the functionality you need. Features include a plug-in architecture and a template system. In simple words it comes with a lot of preconfigured functionality. Using WordPress you can design your home page, take advantage of its blogging functionality and upload and display images through its built in gallery.
One cool thing about WordPress is that you can customize its look by just selecting from thousands of themes and plugins. Themes are the look and feel of the WordPress front end. Plugins are add-ons to WordPress that provide additional functionality. Some are free and others will cost you a few bucks. A few words about plugins; do your research before installing these, some plugins will do what they are meant to accomplish, but like so many other things in life plugins can make your life miserable. Specially un- tested plugins and/or rushed out plugins that can break your WordPress site leaving you to pick up the pieces. Check, compare and visit there support pages to get an idea of known issues before you decide to install that cool new plugin. And don’t forget; keep your plugin quantity to the minimum required.Remember; every plugin you install will further slow down your site; some exceptions apply here.
I tried the WordPress 2014 theme (look and feel of the WordPress front end), but it was not what I required, space was not distributed as expected for my photography gallery. I opted to purchase a theme more aligned with my nature photography ideas. After a lot of analysis I opted to buy e404 Natural Theme. This theme was designed with photography in mind, it has a lot of built in code snippets and functions that really make your site shine. It has an easy to use Admin Panel and a lot of customization possibilities. You can create a simple website, a personal portfolio or a professional looking weblog in just a few minutes (at least that is what the vendor states) I’d say it will help you get to where you want, but not in a few minutes. It requires no coding skills, if you keep your site simple, but it also provides a lot of possibilities if you have some knowledge of coding.
e404 Natural Theme also provides excellent support. No; I am not getting paid for this. I wish I was. Nature Theme if you want to send me money please do so. The Nature Theme recommends additional plugins, yes it sounds silly to buy a plugin that requires additional plugins, but that is the way with WordPress. The three recommended plugins are WP PageNavi by Lester ‘GaMerZ’ Chan & scribe, Contact Form 7 by Takayuki Miyoshi and Widget Contact Form 7 by Stephanie Wells. The e404 Natural Theme will cost you some money while the additional plugins are free.
In regards to the design and main components of a Photography Site I chose to follow the basics. I wanted a homepage that would be updated almost every day so I chose to pull images from my Instagram page which I update regularly. This means that those images I upload to Instagram automatically get posted to my site’s main page. Instagram is a great place to promote your page and have followers, more about social site further down this series of posts. I decided to make a dedicated blog page separated from the main page that said; I chose to display the two most recent blog entries on the home page. The image galleries are divided in three main areas Forests, Swamps and Seashores although I have continued to add other special series galleries and expect to add many more.
There is also a photography page I thought would inspire others to take on the photography hobby. A Slide Show page was an afterthought that highlights some of my seashores images. Finishing the roundup are the About and Contact pages. The About page describes a little about me and what my site is all about. The Contact page provides the means to contact meby providing an entry point for visitors to share their thoughts. It’s a pretty basic design, simple and to the point just Puerto Rico Nature Photography. That is it for today; on the next post I will go over the hosting and web page platform. Can’t wait for next post and need the whole document now? Email me.
